Important Announcement from University of Mississippi

Dept. of Health coordinating with UM to identify, notify, test students, faculty, staff potentially exposed to active case of tuberculosis

The safety and well-being of our students, faculty, and staff are a top priority for the University of Mississippi. You’re receiving this email to inform you that the Mississippi State Department of Health is coordinating with the University of Mississippi to identify, notify, and conduct screenings with students, faculty, and staff at UM potentially exposed to an active tuberculosis case.

The Mississippi State Department of Health will test approximately 500 individuals on the UM Oxford campus for TB infection. Those individuals were notified via campus e-mail earlier today with details about the upcoming testing. Individuals who did not receive the email are NOT at risk for infection.

We will continue to utilize the expertise and assistance provided by the Mississippi State Department of Health to ensure the public health of our community.

See the attached document for a list of facts about tuberculosis. For more information about tuberculosis, please visit www.healthyms.com/tb or http://www.cdc.gov/tb/publications/faqs/default.htm

For general questions or to speak with a university representative, please contact Dr. Travis Yates at the University Health Center at 662-915-7274.

To reiterate, you are NOT at risk if you did not receive notification about upcoming testing. As a university entrusted with your safety, we felt it best to communicate about the measures we are taking to ensure our community well-being.

Sincerely,

Brandi Hephner LaBanc

Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs
