Ole Miss Theatre & Film: Faulkner's The Marionettes

Join us in Meek Auditorium Monday, Oct. 22 at 7:30 p.m. for a staged reading of Faulkner's play The Marionettes. Reception to follow.

Join us in Meek Auditorium on Monday, October 22 at 7:30 p.m. for a rare staged reading of Faulkner's little-known one-act play, "The Marionettes." Faulkner wrote this play circa 1921 while he was a student at Ole Miss, where he participated in the campus theatre group bearing the same name as the play.

The play was written years before any of the novels for which Faulkner would become famous were published, but the language foreshadows some of the stylistic penchants and innovations he was known for. This pared-down performance highlights Faulkner's language by eschewing most elements of a full theatrical production, such as costumes, props, sets and staging.

After the performance, there will be a talk-back with Professor Peter Wood of the Department of Theatre and Film, and Jay Watson, Howry Chair of Faulkner Studies; following that will be a reception next door in the lobby of Meek Hall. This event is free and open to the public.
