Faculty Recital Series: Everett Brings 'The Good Sound'

'The Good Sound' is a recital of music for euphonium (whose name comes from the Greek for 'good sounding') with piano or electronics.

“The Good Sound” is a recital of music for euphonium (whose name comes from the Greek for “good sounding” or “pleasant-sounding”) with piano or electronics. A couple of lyrical tunes, The Holy Well by Peter Graham and an arrangement of Gabriel’s Oboe by Ennio Morricone (from the film The Mission) demonstrate this sound most effectively. On the more technical side of things are an arrangement of Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 by Franz Liszt, From the Shores of the Mighty Pacific by Sousa Band cornetist Herbert L. Clarke, and Dr. Everett’s new arrangement of Concertino No. 1 by Julius Klengel. This past spring Dr. Everett participated in a commissioning consortium to have composer Ben McMillan create a new work for euphonium and electronics. The resulting work, Mandelbrot’s Dream, incorporates rock and funk elements and is named for Polish-French-American mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot, whose interest in fractal images somehow influenced the creation of this work.

Associate Professor of Music Micah Everett normally enjoys performing recitals incorporating multiple low brass instruments, so this program focusing on the euphonium alone is a departure from his usual practice. Appropriately referred to as the tenor member of the tuba family, the euphonium is an effective solo instrument possessing, as its name suggests, a beautiful (or “good”) sound. Professor Emeritus Stacy Rodgers is an outstanding collaborative pianist, and we are privileged to continue to enjoy his fantastic playing even in his retirement.
