Chief Financial Officer
Definition of Class
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is responsible for directing the financial function of the Ole Miss Athletics Foundation (Foundation) in accordance with generally accepted accounting and financial principles and regulations. The CFO supports the CEO in ensuring that resource allocation and utilization facilitates the achievement of Foundation goals established by the Board of Governors.
The CFO works with the Chief Executive Officer CEO to develop the Foundation's budget; administers and monitors operating plans and budgets; manages the accounts and all financial records; prepares and issues financial statements and reports; oversees the payroll and benefits functions; and supervises business staff. The CFO contributes to the overall financial policy development of the Foundation.
As a key member of the Foundation's staff, the CFO participates in the process of setting the organization's strategic direction and short and long-term plans, and in translating the vision and corporate goals set by the Foundation's Board of Governors into effective operational strategies and actions.
Examples of Work Performed
Assists the CEO with key financial decisions and serves as a member of the executive leadership team.
Advises the CEO and the Foundation's Board of Governors on all matters pertaining to finance policy to ensure that financial strategies, decisions, and functions effectively facilitate achievement of Foundation goals.
Provides counsel to the CEO in the formulation of overall fiscal policies and plans regarding both short and long-term financial matters related to the Foundation.
Oversees the preparation of the annual Foundation budget, financial reports, and any specialized or recurring account reports, summaries and statistical reports for various stakeholders.
Reviews budget reports prepared by the business staff, monitoring the overall budget to ensure budget goals are met.
Assists in contractual agreements for the Athletics Department concerning coaches and external vendors.
Investigates any financial irregularities and makes necessary revisions, insuring proper application of NCAA, SEC, University Policy and state laws as related to financial affairs.
Oversees Foundation receipts, deposits, and authorizations for expenditures, including travel authorizations and advances, payroll, purchase requisitions, etc.
Provides timely and accurate analysis of budgets, financial reports, and financial trends to assist the CEO and executive team in decision-making and goal execution.
Serves a liaison with University of Mississippi CFO, the University of Mississippi Foundation CFO, and the Senior Associate Athletics Director for Finance.
Ensures all assigned tasks are in compliance with Foundation, University, Southeastern Conference, and NCAA rules and regulations.
Manages special financial/budget projects as assigned and performs similar or related duties as required.
Essential Functions
These essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following. Additional essential functions may be identified and included by the CEO.
- Assists the CEO with key financial decisions and serves as Chief Financial Officer for the Foundation.
- Oversees all financial operations of the Foundation.
- Prepares the budget and financial reports for constituents.
- Serves as Signatory Officer for the Foundation’s expenditures.
Minimum Requirements
Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Bachelor’s degree in accounting from an accredited four-year college or university
6 years financial management experience
Experience with personnel oversight
Excellent interpersonal, organizational, oral, and written communication skills
Strong and positive leadership skills
Computer application skills including but not limited to Microsoft Excel and Word, Apple products, donation tracking software, and email
Knowledge of the practices, principles, and methods of fundraising
Knowledge of NCAA and SEC compliance rules and regulations
Ability to be highly energetic, self-starting, and creative
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with individuals from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds
Ability to support the equity commitments of the Foundation and athletics department
Ability to effectively work in a highly consultative and collaborative environment
Ability to give and receive information through vision, speaking and listening, and effective motor coordination. Corrective devices may be used
Preferred Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Master’s degree
CPA designation
Experience in non-profit finance
